Celtic Thunder - R
For a long time now, both Aaron and I have enjoyed the music of both Celtic Thunder and Celtic Women, so it was a real treat to find that Celtic Thunder would be playing at the Metro Centre and we splurged and got ourselves some tickets.
Though it wasn't all of the members of the original group, the performance was incredible and we were really impressed with the versatility of their voices.

Photography Class - R
This fall I decided to take a photography class to learn how to better make use of my digital SLR camera and get the most out of my pictures.
It was on Tuesday evenings over a 6-week period and I got a lot out of it. We learned about choosing proper focal length, making use of aperture and shutter speed options, played around with white balance and ISO, and overall got more comfortable with my camera.
Here are some of my favourite shots taken as homework:

Changing Gears - A
So, August is over, and with it my time at the DOJ. Working there was a pleasure for many reasons. First, many supportive people, both supervisors and co-workers. Second, challenging projects that are actually having some level of impact (one of which required simple touch-ups on my memo before sending it on to government ministers!). Third, working regular hours with regular time off and actually getting paid was a very welcome change, and it will be greatly missed. And lastly, it appears very likely that my position there will translate into articles come June (thanks to some glowing references). The formalities should be sorted sometime in October, with paperwork to file in March. Believe it or not there are still many classmates trying to find articling positions, so if all goes well I'm sitting pretty by comparison.
It's been a good summer outside of work too, aside from the un-summer-like weather here. June and July were cool and wet, and August has had much cloud and more heat, with Hurricane Irene (which missed us by a fair margin) bringing a few days of heavy humidity. I got to watch the West Wing with Racheal - surprisingly we both loved it, as it combined a behind-the-scenes look at the political and practical machinations of the White House with very relate-able characters, brilliant writing, and real-life challenges. I can't recommend it highly enough, and will miss both it and the free time to watch shows during the semester.
Fall brings with it the eventual return of hockey season (which will look even better now that CBC has put its high-definition signal over the air for my rabbit ears to grab) and of course school. 3L. The last hurrah. Once more unto the breach. The final push. I'm taking a heavier courseload in the fall term, and easing off slightly for the winter. Sadly, there will be no more Rollie Days, but my schedule looks pretty agreeable.
Monday is Crown law at 0830 (nasty timing!), with a break until 3pm for Admin law (tribunals, boards, etc). Tuesdays through Thursdays don't start until 1230 or later, incorporating Tax law (pain), Labour (unions and bargaining), and Criminal Law Problems, which is a paper course taught by a Crown prosecutor from my summer there, running 2 hours Thursday evenings. Fridays remain free, so I should be able to cram in my reading and still be able to have some time with Racheal now and then. So the damage after fall semester is 4 exams (including 2 consecutive days) and 1 major paper.
Winter semester's formal schedule is even better. Monday from 4:30 to 9:00 (yes, pm!) for Succession (writing wills) and the Criminal Law Clinic (which was highly recommended to me by PPS staff and others - this involves spending 16-20hrs/week in court following a judge or lawyer around. This course has no exam or major assignments, just a decent time commitment). Tuesdays and Thursdays are free (likely for court time), and Wednesday has Professional Responsibility (legal ethics taught by Devlin from 1L contracts). Friday has a 2-hour afternoon Criminal Law Clinic block, and that's it. The damage after winter semester is 2 exams on consecutive days, period. Not a bad way to go out!
So, I've already bought my textbooks (cheaper and fewer since the school's decided to offer more free content online rather than paying for copyrighted articles), have my bag re-packed, and am making the most of my free time until Wednesday afternoon, when class begins. There's an island at the mouth of the harbour (McNab's Island) that has an abandoned military outpost we might try go see, and maybe a couple barbecues on the roof to be had while the nicer weather lasts.
That's the kind of summer it's been, and how my fall's shaping up.
