Blog? You mean it doesn't post my musings automatically? What good is that?!
What a semester this is shaping up to be! Life is taking off in many areas, and the ride's accelerating. Racheal writes her Canadian RN certification exam in early February, and is settling in to work - her 12 minute walk each way certainly beats fighting bridge traffic in Metro Vancouver! I'm sure she'll have stories and opinions to share, but for now she's adjusting to new people, new methods (Code Purple = "patient in the harbour" - given the nature of the harbour that may indicate a hazmat caution, but seriously, does it happen that often that it gets its own code colour??), and old equipment. She was very spoiled in BC! Otherwise, I think she's settling in ok, adjusting to copious free time on her side for a change (sadly, it rarely coincides with my limited free time), and fitting in socially with some of my classmates.
As for me, after a great break with Racheal I'm increasingly swamped with catching up on an old project and new assignments, on top of readings. It's a challenge finding "us" time, and will be for another week or two, but we're adjusting and finding a balance. I have been able to babysit for a classmate (much to the shock of everyone I tell - is it really so surprising??) and have some evenings out with Racheal. Mainly I've been reading though, but I'm still loving law school and Halifax.
How best to describe winter in Halifax? Like Victoria, only 10-15 degrees colder. There's no mountains to stack weather up against, so clouds and such just blow on through. For a while, with humidity and wind chill, we were down to -17C or so, but the cycle is to freeze, get some snow, thaw for a bit, maybe have some rain, occasional wind, then re-freeze. Nothing like the prairie deep freeze, and not that much worse than Vancouver. We're in for a bit of stormy weather, so we'll see how that goes. What's really neat is that they've got mini sidewalk snowplows - I'll have to get a picture of one in action sometime. Maybe the next snowfall.
Hmm, what other news is there? I'm playing intramural floor hockey, involved in a class talent show, catching up on a volunteer project, going in for a blood test on Monday to see if I'm a match for a patient needing marrow or stem cells, and volunteering for the Public Prosecution Service this summer while likely working as a research assistant on campus. Racheal's going back to Vancouver for her grad (maybe even as valedictorian! I'm so proud!) and working feverishly to arrange being able to serve as a volunteer at the Olympics (seating people in the men's hockey games!!!) without missing too many shifts at work. Crossed fingers for that!
Much as things are happening fast and piling on, I daresay we're both still liking it here (right, dear?) and surviving fine. Now, it's time for dinner before I get back to my Crim assignment. With any luck I'll be able to post more often, and if you're very very lucky you'll get to hear the sounds of a new nurse in her natural habitat sometime in the future.
